Gravel calculator

Enter the area and depth to get cubic yards, tons and bags. The example is a 20 × 10 ft path at 3 inches deep: about 1.85 cubic yards, or 2.6 tons of crushed stone.

1.4 US tons per cubic yard is a common starting figure for crushed stone. Weight varies with stone type, size and moisture, so use your supplier's figure when you have it.

How the calculator works

Length × width × depth gives the volume. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by the weight per cubic yard to get tons.

How deep should gravel be?

UseTypical depth
Decorative top layer over landscape fabric2–3 in
Garden or walking path3–4 in
Driveway, top layer over a compacted base4–6 in

These are common rules of thumb. A driveway on soft ground needs a deeper compacted base; check local guidance or a contractor.

Bags vs bulk

Bag sizeBags per cubic yard
0.5 cu ft54
0.75 cu ft36
1 cu ft27

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so bag counts follow directly from bag volume. For more than about a cubic yard, bulk delivery is usually cheaper.
